There is no such thing as a free lunch
Everyone has a ‘theory on change’ though, for most of us, it’s not something we explicitly articulate. That’s something that should change. Given the failure of society to engage with the existential issue of sustainability, maybe it’s about time we all started thinking and talking about what we think enables change.
We want change, but our governments keep doing the same thing. In many cases governments exert stronger control to ensure things stay the same. The irony here is that, over time, the more our leaders attempt to hold things the same, the more things change and slip out of their control. That’s the nature of complex systems. (Part 3 in our series on change.)
In the face of an increasingly uncertain future there are growing calls for change across society. But our elected officials, despite talking big at election time, only give us increments of nothing when it comes to delivery.
More people are growing concerned about climate change and environmental decline. But when will society respond with real change? Latest news in Australian politics: The blues, being overly influenced by the browns, thought they could ignore the wishes of electorate. They thought they could trounce the reds while laughing at the greens because they believed a sufficiently frightened public would shy away from change, stick with a status quo no matter how inadequate. The teals appeared as if from nowhere and proved them dead wrong.
With 33 ‘bites’ now under our belt, I thought I’d take a look over what we’ve discussed so far and see if any themes are emerging.
It was the same contest of values at play but the actors in this drama this time around threw pebbles that had resonance with the broader community.
